when I open several documets in textpad by clicking on the document TP is started instead of opening the documents in the same instance of textpad.

How do I prevent TP from opening so many times and make use of the same one?

This can be done from the Configure->Preferences menu.

Just untick the 'Allow multiple instances to run' box.
