Trying to work on files for a website that will use SSI, on our serve we have to upload the webpage files as .shtm for the SSI to work.

in TextPad I know how to save with the extension *.shtm but I can't get TextPad to open this file as a web page. Is this not possible?
I have upgraded to 4.4.1.
Can't find anything on this in online support or searching the forum.

This is controlled by the Document Class that *.SHTM is in. It could be in the HTML class, but if it was it would probably work automatically ... If it isn't defined anywhere (in which case it falls under Default) then you should define it in HTML; if it's actually defined somewhere else then you need to check the View in Web Browser box for that Doc Class [configure/preferences/Document Class/*whatever*]
