Text 8.21.0 new "incorrect path" warning appearing

Hi

Since updating TextPad to 8.21 earlier today, I have seen a warning message (screenshot attached) appear several times while editing files. I'm assuming that TextPad is making a backup of the current file I'm working on in the AppData area and is reporting that it contains an "incorrect path" and probably fails to save it. The path in question not only has two adjacent backslashes (e.g. "TextPad\7\\") which might be an issue or, probably more likely, it might be that there is no subdirectory of "7" - there is one named "8" instead. Manually adding a "7" subdirectory in appears to fix the issue.

Regards
David

It looks like your backup folder was copied from TextPad 7 when you upgraded to version 8, and then you deleted the version 7 config folder, or copied version 8 to a new PC. Anyway, you can change that folder as shown on this screenshot:

Thanks.

Yes, that folder path was certainly still saying "7" instead of "8" and I have now updated it manually.

However, I have no recollection of deleting the "7" folder recently though I may have done so in the distant past as I assumed it might not be needed for version 8. Also, I have been using version 8 for several years now and have never seen that warning before.

This leads me to the following question: for that "Backups" folder path to be used, does the "Automatically save every XX minutes" box need to be ticked in the Backup pane of the Preferences? If it does, then I have never ticked that box (and it remains unticked) which might suggest that TextPad from version 8.21.0 is doing an automatic backup without checking that setting. It might be worth someone checking this.

Thanks again
David

In previous releases, the folder used for automatic timed saves was fixed as %LOCALAPPDATA%\Helios\TextPad. It is now whatever is set for backups, which defaults to that folder on new installations. Please check if any files are being created in your backup folder when automatic timed saves are disabled.

I am having the same issue in Text 9.9.5 on Win 11, which led me to this older post. I did have autosave set to every 10 minutes and am following these good directions. On my Windows 10 PC, I forgot to enable autosave and lost about 1.5 hours of work when it crashed due to an unrecoverable error.

I have had Texpad for decades?? Long time. Joined this board in 2009, I see. But a new computer about a year ago, but the incorrect path seems to have started a month or more ago, but not when I recall doing any updates, etc.

But this post was useful, and AI let me do it.

OK it shows in Preferences Folders/Backups is
C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Roaming\Helios\TextPad\8\

So, the guess had updated from 8 to 9, but I'm not too computer-literate, so I'm not sure whether the full URL should be. %LOCALAPPDATA%\Helios\TextPad pasted in the box shows seems right place with my username but says syntax wrong. Maybe \9 will try.

Nope, doesn't work as C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Local\Helios\TextPad\9
This is similar to all the other folders but they are in Roaming, instead of Local, except the Templates startup.

All else is working fine but would like to turn back on the auto saving.

If anyone else finds this thread, it might be helpful to know the exact syntax to use....
