bilingual spell check questions

Post by ineuw »

Is it possible to combine TP spellcheck on documents that contain French words? I searched the posts, most likely incorrectly, but after Brexit, who knows? :D

TextPad can only spell check one language at a time. If there's a fairly small vocabulary of French words in your documents, you can either add them to the lexicon as you encounter them or by using Configure » Preferences » Spelling » Edit.

Thanks for the reply. I asked because the Firefox browser added a bilingual spell checking feature (currently per session), which for me, living in Québec Canada is a much sought and welcome addition. I just asked.

Yes, but it can be quite unreliable, which is what I expect, because there is no reliable distinction pattern for what makes up one portion of a text (Is it sentences? Lines? Paragraphs?) And on such a portion choosing the language that yields fewer errors is also not a reliable decision. It pretty much ends up in just guessing what is used, especially when using anglicisms in French and french loanwords in English.

Maybe a compromise would be to quickly change between spellcheck languages? Like a separate menu item, or a combobox in the toolbar? With assignable hotkeys?

Sorry for not following this up. Switching languages is the only option for now.
