How to configure TextPad so that ASC file behaves like TXT

I have configured TextPad 8 to open plain text files that have the file extension .ASC.
TextPad 'overrides' Notepad of course.
If a (plain text) file is created, no name at this stage, then saved as .ASC rather than .TXT, the word-wrapping and very convenient property that TextPad has, to display a URL in blue, are lost.
Is there a way to make a .ASC file behave exactly like a .TXT file and with multiple files within the same instance (ie, multiple tabs), for each to comply with the settings in use at the time?
(hope I have explained this OK)
