Need option to ignore regex characters in replacement text

When I'm using RegEx search and replace it's a royal pain having to remember and escape all RegEx meta characters in the replacement text. I can't see the reason for replacement text recognising RegEx characters other the the $0, $1 (and so on) placeholders
