I am not sure anything can be done about this, but there appears to be some sort of bad interaction between TP and either Thunderbird or Opera when one or another of these two latter update themselves. I am not sure which because they both updated at the same, though I believe it is Thunderbird as the problem did happen once previously.

What is happening is that files open in TP when the program updates become clipped off on the left-hand margin by several characters.

The files can be rescued from their locations, but simply closing a workspace and opening it again does not correct the problem. The files must be deleted from the workspace, the workspace closed and re-opened and the files restored at that point.

To make it clear: there is no "damage" in the means of file content, right? Each file still contains what it had before, and saving one file in TextPad would not unexpectedly trim any content?

Because then it "just" sounds like a visual problem. Were you able to still see the text cursor at positions 1, 2, 3 etc. for each line, or did it also go out of view?

I do not remember where the cursor was, but I was able to move it around.

I should have taken a screen shot, but I was flustered at thinking I was going to lose a few very important files.

What you see is the file as normally, but with the first one or several characters on the left side outside of the window. Closing the file and re-loading it does not change the situation. Closing the workspace and re-opening it does not change the situation. To correct the situation you need to empty out the workspace and close it, re-open it and re-load the files from their original locations. The content is not damaged. Yes t is really 'just' a visual problem. The page rendering has been bumped to the left.

I do not know what you mean by: "and saving one file in TextPad would not unexpectedly trim any content?" but you can save a new file in the damaged workspace without a problem.

Just to follow up:

This morning Thunderbird wanted to update. So I closed it down, created a large .txt file and saved it and then allowed Thunderbird to update and there was no problem.

This problem may have been an early sign of the problem that happened later which was that my trackball blew up Textpad and some other stuff completely. See later post.
