Is there an internal command to match the menu
Window -> New Vertical Tab Group ?

You can assign a keyboard shortcut from Configure/Preference/Keyboard.

Under Categories choose Window. Under Commands choose either of the following:

WindowTileHorz
WindowTileVert

I hope this helps.

I already have a key assigned to Tile Vertically.
What I was after was the other function of New Vertical Tab Group

Am I correct that there is no command for that and so I cannot assign a key?

How about version 8?

Does version 8 have a command that can be assigned to a key?

  • "New Vertical Tab Group" is the menu item caption when you display your documents in tabs (View > Document Tabs).
  • "Tile Vertically" is the menu item caption when you have MDI windows which can be positioned and sized freely.
Only the latter displays your configured shortcut, but they both work the same way and are also triggered unrelated if displaying windows or tabs.

Tested and confirmed with 8.4.2.

New Vertical Tab Group and Tile Vertically do different things.

I already have a key assigned for Tile Vertically.

I want to be able to assign a key for New Vertical Tab Group.

I understand that this is not possible in any version up to and including 8.8 so have added it in Enhancement Suggestions

do different things
But which? When tabs are used a new group is the only outcome that can occur, because tabs have no individual height. And when windows are used a tiling is the only outcome that can occur, because nothing can be grouped.

Have you actually assigned a shortcut key to WindowTileVert although this name is not what you want and then tried it, despite using tabs and despite the shortcut key not being displayed in the window menu item? What is then still missing for you?

New Vertical Tab Group and WindowTileVert don't do the same thing. If document tabs are enabled and, say, five documents are open, New Vertical Tab Group moves the current document to a new group. The WindowTileVert command puts all documents in separate groups.

There's no keyboard shortcut for New Vertical Tab Group, but you could use the keyboard accelerator Alt+W, V.

True! Thanks

... but I would really like to be able to assign a key to the command.

I posted an Enhancement Suggestion for this
