Hi, it looks like this topic has been broached before but I have seen no definitive solutions provided.

I am a longtime TextPad customer (bought Textpad 3.0 back in the early 90's). It's been my go-to text editor for all these years - because it just works! - and I don't enjoy fixing things that ain't broke.

But I am finally considering upgrading because I need to review some huge logfiles. I have downgraded and installed your latest release, and when trying to open my 1.3GB file, it generates an "access denied" error message. I am running Windows 7, SP1, with full admin privileges. I have done the usual, "file/folder permissions/ownership drill", but it still won't let me open this file. In fact, the only way I can open it is to use TextPad in a Windows XP virtual machine.

Can someone tell me what I need to do to address this problem?

By "downgraded" you surely mean "downloaded" and by "latest release" you surely mean 8.1.2, right? We still don't know which architecture: 32bit or 64bit?

Which architectures are your Windowses: 32bit or 64bit? So you're saying the same file on the same location (and not just a copy) from which both installations (logical and virtual) have access to can once be opened and once not?

Sadly the error message is too vague, too - it can either mean a permission issue (does Textpad actually run with the same user as the file's access permissions? Taskman > Processes, column "User" will tell so) or it can mean an access issue (another process has exclusively opened the file). And I'm not sure if a memory issue (TextPad 32bit) will bring up a more distinctive message.

Ok, this is getting weird.

1st, thanks for your reply. It caused me to check some things.
2nd, I've got good news & bad news - all weird.

I went back to my virtual machine installation (VMware 9). It's a Windows 7x32 SP1 installations. To my surprise, Textpad 8 was able to load the file. It took a while, but that was expected in my memory-constrained VM.

So I rebooted my machine into my Windows 7x32 test partition and am unable to get Textpad 8 to open this file. It gives me the same "access denied" error message.

Then, I rebooted into my Windows 7x64 test partition and installed Textpad 8.1.2 64-bit. After adjusting permissions to give "everyone" access to Textpad and the file, I was able to open it successfully. So far, so good.

But my production environment is 32-bit, so I reluctantly installed Textpad 8.1.2 32-bit in my production environment, thinking that my test 32-bit partition may have some registry problems. But I have the same problem in my production environment- Textpad refuses to open the file in question and generates the same "access denied" error.

You are correct - the error message is much too vague. It's definitely not permissions, no other programs/processes trying to lock the file, no memory issues, etc. If Textpad would just give me a "real" error message, I could intelligently investigate and decide if it's worth fixing.
