Other "fine products" on the market

Increasingly, I find myself having to work with Unicode or UTF-8 files from time to time. NotePad++ is free, plus we have a license at work for UltraEdit.
Today I had a WTMF moment with UE. Opened an 800 MB file, just to look at it in UE. Little voice in my head said, "Make a backup first", so I did.
Opened it up, just opened it, and it updated the datetime on the file. Closed it, told UE not to save, but the datetime was updated.
Seriously?! TextPad might have a limitation with Unicode, but Gott in Himmel it doesn't just wing it and make stuff up. Oy mio.
