I would much prefer that files open in new windows, not new tabs.

Can someone please explain how to do this!?

Click View > Document Tabs to turn off the tabs.

Then, if you still only see one window, you can click the Restore button on the document window (circled below) to see multiple windows.



Note that TextPad uses a multiple document interface (MDI), so the document windows reside within the main program window.
