Textpad opens "On Top" of all other windows.

I have been using Textpad V 5.3.1 on Windows 7 Home Premium x64.
Starting yesterday (18-Oct-2013), Textpad began staying on top of all other program windows (topmost window). I can switch to any other program window and the other programs behave properly, but the window for any other program remains "behind" the Textpad window.
I haven't made any changes to Textpad (or other programs). I suppose it could be a result of a recent Windows 7 Update (on 16-Oct), but as far as I can remember, Textpad behaved normally after those Windows Updates. The only update to Windows on the day Textpad began this behavior was an update to the definitions for Microsoft Security Essentials (on 17-Oct and 18-Oct).
I tried searching the forum (and also did Google searches), but I found no reports of similar problems.
I tried reinstalling Textpad v 5.3.1 (repair) which completed normally, but there was no change to the behavior.
Next I did an upgrade to Textpad v 5.4.2 which also completed normally, but there was still no change to the behavior.
I have no problem to update to the current version of Textpad (7.0.9), but I want to do it carefully so I don't loose any preference settings and customizations. Should I update to Textpad v 6.2.2 then to v 7.0.9, or do I need to add any other intermediate updates?
Any suggestions would be helpful.
Update:
I found the option under Configure->Preferences->View->[x] Stay on top of other windows.
I found that this option was checked, but I never used that option before and I didn't set it that way (perhaps a mis-typed shortcut key).
I set it to Unchecked, and all is well.
I'd still like to know the best way to proceed to update Textpad from version 5.4.2 to version 7.0.9.
