Update: I uninstalled Textpad and reinstalled it with no success. I even set txt files to be associated with TextPad, but that didn't work either.

When I check "Replace Notepad" and then press 'Apply', the selection unchecks itself!

Why and how do I fix this?

I'm not at all sure how or why, but now it SEEMS to be fixed. Trouble is, if I don't know why or how, I can't depend on it.
