custom toolbars disappear

I'm using TextPad 5.4.2 (I know - too cheap to upgrade) on Windows 7 and any customization I make to the toolbars disappears after I close/reopen TextPad.
I know the "stock answer" will be to reinstall but I want to avoid that if possible.
Suggestions?

The toolbar settings are stored in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Helios\TextPad\5.0\config.xml. You could try renaming or deleting the file to see if that helps.

Version 6 is a free upgrade.
