In version 4 the tool output used to be just another window like every other. This was very useful because it meant that it could be docked in the document selector and pulled up as and when required. Since version 4 it has become a flyout window which appears over the top of the code window. Is there any way of reverting the tool output (and the search results for that matter) back to a normal window?

Yes, in Configure > Preferences > View, under Dockable log windows, clear Search Results and Tool Output.

I was just coming back to delete this thread because I had just discovered the answer.
