reverting to notepad?

Maybe not the best subject, but it's close.
I was preparing an old laptop for sale and in the process deleted textpad (I'm not in the habit of leaving licensed software on old machines :-) but forgot that I had checked the "replace notepad" on the preferences screen. Now notepad doesn't work in the laptop. Any thoughts on what I need to do to get notepad to work again?
