Editing a Windows Media playlist file with Textpad

When I wanted to move my mp3s from their current location on one hard drive to another, of course the thousands of WM playlists I created would not work. I had no problem opening one of these files with Textpad and was easily able using search and replace to change the paths to the new hard drive, but found that when I clicked on one of the playlists, I thought it was working great, because the music was playing, but I found out that the music was not coming from the new location, but the old one. I then loaded the playlist back into textpad and found that WM had re-written the file -- changed the paths back to the way they were in the original file before I changed it and saved it.
My question is: Is there some way to edit these things with Textpad so I don't have to go and create a bajillion new playlists.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer
