Upgraded ro 5.4 and Textpad is freezing

I installed over the top of the existing 5.3.1 installation in my usual procedure.
Textpad 5.4 came up and asked if I wanted to switch over to the new toolbar and I said yes.
Things seemed good until I exited and restarted at which time it loaded, the gray area seemed to stay around for longer than seemed absolutely necessary, then the empty text area popped up and the hourglass remained on screen for... 2 hours thirteen minutes at the longest count.
I uninstalled all Textpad stuff and tried a clean reinstall... which, apparently wasn't clean because the new installation remembered not only the freezing behavior but the configuration data.
So I went into the registry and removed all mention of Textpad, rebooted and installed Textpad 5.3.1. Ahh, hello? It asks me if I want to switch to the new toolbar? I don't get it... unless Textpad 5.4 installs some DLL into the system area but a search for "textpad" (naive right?) on the system partition didn't show anything. (JFTR, I install Textpad to folder outside the system partition).
At this point I am Textpadless and it seems like, short of reinstalling the OS (XP SP3), I will remain that way unless someone out there has a bright idea?
