Yet another pane pain

1) In good old 4.*, I used to have windows open such that I had this kind of arrangement:
Ideally, each would be a pane with its own set of tabs.
2) It would be really nice to be able to minimize a whole pane. I know I can turn tabbed mode off with a "I repeat: One click on View" but that does not give the ability to temporarily dismiss a group of files while still allowing other groups (ie: other panes) to remain available.
I know panes have been a long and difficult topic for a long time. I was dead set against them at the start but they kind of grow on your. However, the above flexibility would certainly make them more useful.
Code: Select all
+---------------++---------------+
| || |
| || pane 2 |
| || |
| pane 1 |+---------------+
| |+---------------+
| || |
| || pane 3 |
| || |

+---------------++---------------+
