Wierd. I click on notepad.exe or its shortcut but TextPad runs instead.
As a developer I need to be able to run Notepad as users do not have TextPad.

How can I rectify this ?

Using Windows 7 64bit. XP does not have this problem.

Clear "Replace Notepad" in the preferences.

Thanks for the help. That worked fine.

Is that the default setting?

Or did I check the box without realizing it? If it's the default, it shouldn't be.

I'm not even sure why it's an option. If I wanted to use Textpad as the default program for .txt files, I could do it by overriding the default in Windows. It was very frustrating trying to figure this out since Windows still showed notepad as the default program for .txt files. If Textpad is going to do this, Textpad should be shown as the default program.

Anyway, thanks for having the answer to this in the forum.

My question was not concerned with the default application for opening text files. I use TexPad for this.

What happened was, I tried to open Notepad using the normal Notepad shortcut and TextPad opened instead.

This gives me another minor irritation - this time with Windows. Although I use TextPad as default Windows still uses the Notepad icon picture for text files in Windows Explorer etc, not the Textpad one - even though I have manually changed it in the default text file. setup.

That's what happened to me also.

That's right.

It seems that Textpad messed up my notepad.exe file something weird. and then when I uninstall textpad so that I can use notepad again, I get this -

C:\WINDOWS\system32>dir notepad.exe
Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is D878-F424

Directory of C:\WINDOWS\system32

08/04/2004 12:56 AM 69,120 notepad.exe
1 File(s) 69,120 bytes
0 Dir(s) 27,677,212,672 bytes free

C:\WINDOWS\system32>notepad.exe
The system cannot find the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\notepad.exe.

Huh??

Guess I'll install textpad again so I can uncheck the box to replace notepad. What the?? Do I really have to re-install textpad to get notepad back??

er ... I suggest you do a search for notepad.exe.
It is usually in C:\Windows

Re-installing Textpad and un-checking the "replace notepad" fixed it.

There is a notepad.exe located in both c:\windows and in c:\windows\system32. Same date/time stamp in both places.

I verified that it's in both places with the same date/time stamp, no matter whether or not the "replace notepad" checkbox is applied in Textpad preferences.

I really wanna know how Textpad is able to hijack the notepad.exe like that. What exactly is it doing when I check that "Replace notepad" box?

This is slightly off-topic, but if you're wondering why Notepad is in both places, this is why :)

Well that was a fun little diversion. :P

So, any idea how I can go about finding out what Textpad is doing exactly?
