Unclick Read Only and make it permament

I searched the help for information to make files editable every time without having to go to Config to unclick "Read Only" every time.
I upgraded to latest few days ago.
Windows XP3, (don' ask me to upgrade to 7 because the computer is still good so far), Firefox 3.6 and Thunderbird 3.5x
I do a lot of archives work dealing mostly text formatted files I get from many people as well as orders that are in text format.
Every file since the upgrade required me to UNclick Read Only before I could edit to clean out garbage.
Where is the feature to disable READ ONLY permament? I went through everything and don't seem to find it.
