defaulting a new file's document class

Hello!
When I open a new document, I want it to use the HTML document class (style and colors). Right now I have to save the file as html for it to take effect.
Opening a new file defaults to the Text document class.
I went to Configure-->Preferences-->Document Classes-->Text and deleted (*.) under 'files in class' but no change.
Also went to the HTML Class and added the following:
(*.) ( *.* ) and (*)
still no change.
Also tried checking "Apply these settings to all document classes.
Suggestions?
