Ever since upgrading to Textpad 5.3, txt files show with a generic icon in the Windows XP file manager. I've checked folder options, and the textpad icon is registered for this type of file. But it doesn't show in file listings. How can I fix this?

Try redoing your .txt file associaiton in TextPad. If that doesn't work, try making the file association in Explorer.
If that doesn't work, associate the .txt files to Notepad and then change the icon back to TextPad by navigating to textpad.exe and choosing your prefered option. Now go to the General Preferences page in TextPad and check the option to Replace Notepad.
I hope this helps.

Hi I thought I would add my two-penn'orth. I arrived here searching for an answer to the same question.
The solutions suggested here - and elsewhere - which involve using the normal windows interface are no good. A symptom of this is that no matter what application we set to open text files, including Notepad, we always get the same icon. There is no "Advanced" option in Explorer 'File Types' for TXT.
The icon is a *system* icon. The proof is that I finally managed to change the icon by downloading free "Icon Tweaker" which is able to hack into the system and change icons (etc). I have seen other applications around that say they can do this too.
