Textopad 4.7.3: How can I reset spell check w/o re-install?

Post by Rekrul »

I have Textpad 4.7.3. I'm not interested in using any of the later versions.

I don't want to re-install it because I have a lot of macros that I've made and quite frankly, the way Textpad 4 handles macros makes it a royal pain in the ass to try to backup and restore them.

My problem is that the spell check seems to be malfunctioning, possibly due to bad choices I've made in the past. It often auto-corrects;

It's

to;

It's'

Although I have looked through all the dictionaries from within Textpad's preferences and I can find absolutely no reference to "It's" whatsoever. It doesn't do it all the time though. If I create a new file and add those words, it doesn't touch them during a spell check. If I edit a file and I'm not paying attention, it's very likely to change them on me.

How can I reset Textpad 4's spell check back to the defaults and wipe out any changes that I may have made?

If you go into the Spelling tool from the Preferences section, there's an Edit button that shows you the active dictionaries for a language and lets you delete the user-defined dictionary (in my case: $(UserDict)\U1033.TLX) or add/create a new dictionary. Seems like the place to look.

OK, I did that and Textpad 4 is still acting flaky. Either there's some spellcheck rule I'm not aware of, or Textpad 4's spell checking is just bugged to hell.

I'm going to make a new post about it to hopefully attract more attention.

My guess is that (almost) nobody has the same problem or knows a solution, as most users will have updated to more recent versions of textpad (4.7.3 is from 2004 - more than 15 years old ...)

I know this is kind of old, but it's not like the forum is all that busy...

The thing is that in most regards, TextPad 4 works fine. It's just completely broken in a couple areas.

I just tried to create a macro that will reformat a list of text links into a set of HTML links, separated into groups of ten. My macro works perfectly, in either immediate mode or if you tell it to repeat a specific number of times. If you tell it to repeat to the end of the file, it completely fails for no apparent reason. I've re-entered it three times now and each time, it works perfectly when I press CTRL-R, it works if I tell it to repeat multiple times, but as soon as I tell it to repeat to the end of the file, it makes one small change and then quits. I even tried saving it to a permanent macro, but that didn't work either.
