Using Window > Split?

Post by terrypin »

I used Window > Split and got this.

How do I get different documents into each section? What is the cross-hatching (which changes as I click each part)? How do I remove both lines quickly?

The Split feature is for viewing different parts of the same document in the one window. It is not for viewing different documents at the same time.

First you need to turn off document tabs.

Then, click the Restore Window icon at the the top-right of the document window:

You can then resize and arrange the windows manually or with the commands in the Window menu.

The cross-hatching shows the inactive pane or panes. In your example, the cursor is in the bottom-left pane, which has focus; the other three panes are inactive.
How do I remove both lines quickly?
Double-click each splitter bar.

I like to use the Vertical Tab Group feature, which is similar but not identical. You can move tabs into each panel and switch the panel between its connected tabs. This is a little easier for me to manage than untabbed/individually windowed documents.

You can have multiple vertical panels at the same time. There is also a horizontal tab group feature. As far as I can tell, you can't use both horizontal and vertical tab grouping at the same time.

Thanks ak47wong, understood.

It will take a little time before I get comfortable with it. As I mentioned in my reply to Ben, at first it seems less straightforward than in 4.7.3, in which any document could be accessed quickly with a single click.

Typically I have 8-12 documents open, six regularly used regardless of project, and say 2-6 more for current work. I tried tiling them all for easy selection when Document Tabs is off, but think I have to use Window > Normalize to maximize the selected one?

BTW, is it possible to assign a shortcut key for Document Tabs, as you can for Document Selector. Otherwise <Alt+v, o> does it fairly quickly.

There'll probably be more basic queries - thanks for your patience! :)

Thanks Risen, but how do I access that to try it please? Couldn't see a feature 'Vertical Tab Group' in Help > Index or using Search.
