Help with Column mode

Post by leegold »

I'm sorry to ask, I searched the forum but can't find what i think is a gemeric think to do. I want to have column mode with textpad. I know it has something to do with block select mode but I can't figure it out.

Also block select mode say ctrl+Q,ctrl+B I'm not sure what they do since there are two of them and when I do them I see no change anywhere including the staus bas - so I'm scraching my head about these key sequence - do they do anything?

say:

kkkkkkkkkkkkkk
kkkkkkkkkkkkkk
kkkkkkkkkkkkkk

and I want to put a space between col3 and 4 on all lines. Most editors there a button that say column mode. Hit it and the with the left mouse button and the mouse you can describe a vertical line at col3 and then press the space bar. Done. How is it done with textpad? What aren't the key sequences working ? Or are they working? What do they do?

Thanks

Block select mode and column mode in TextPad mean the same thing. Block select mode isn't available when word wrapping is turned on, so that may be why you can't enable it. Make sure word wrapping is off.

The keyboard command to toggle block select mode is CTRL+Q, B not CTRL+Q, CTRL+B. Press CTRL+Q and then press B.

Block select mode in TextPad is mostly useful for two things: copying blocks and filling blocks. To put a space between columns 3 and 4 on all lines in your example, you need to use the Fill Block feature:

1. With block select mode enabled, select the entire 4th column of text.
2. Click Edit > Fill Block.
3. In With characters, enter a space.
4. Under Fill mode, click Insert.
5. Click OK.

Quick bit of information:
For block Select mode to work you need the document to be in a non proportional font. e.g. Courier.
