Under General Preferences, I have checked Reload last workspace at startup. Yet when I open Textpad, it takes me to Desktop, from where I have to go to My Computer, etc.
How can I go directly to the directory at which I was last working?

This is a silly question, but are you using workspaces? They aren't automatically created.
Once you have the files opened that you'd liked, File -> Workspace -> Save As and then give it a name (default.tws) Now you have created a workspace. Close TP out and when it re-opens it should reopen all those same files.
TP 5.2.0

That is a rude reply. But apparently that gives you pleasure. I am a beginner. I do not know what a workspace is. All I want is, when I open TP, it does not go to Desktop or to My Computer, but to the directory at which I was previously working.
Is that too much for someone to answer in a civil manner?

That was not a rude reply. It was non-critical, direct, and very helpful with step by step instructions. And most importantly, it was correct! I was going to make the same suggestion myself, but did not, because it seemed to be so obvious. The reply by talleyrand was an attempt to help you out, and it sounds like the comments were absolutely correct. talleyrand has been providing excellent help for many years on this forum and does not deserve your criticism.
I suggest that you become a little less sensitive, express some appreciation, and read the Help files included with TextPad. You made an option choice that mentioned workspace, but never checked to see what they were, how they worked, etc. Great help is available here, but most users expect you to do some of your own work.

Directory at startup
My apologies to Tallyrand. Andrew was correct. Tallyrand was referring to his question, not mine. I was in fact not working with work spaces. And having now read what they are, that is not what I want. My question should have been: Is it possible for TP to start at the last exited directory, rather than always at MyDesktop?

You may not be interested in Workspaces as they are intended, but they may be the solution to your problem. As talleyrand mentioned, if you save your document as a Workspace, then when you open that Workspace, it will open to one of the documents that is part of the Workspace.
So you could create a Workspace whose only purpose is to provide the opening directory. You could create a blank document and save it in a directory, then save it in a workspace. When you open TextPad with the Workspace start switch, that document/folder will be opened. When ever you work on another document, be sure to save it in the desired folder and in the same Workspace before you close TextPad.

How about this:
>configure>preferences>folders>startup
create a folder for shortcuts to which this points
H:\TextPadOpen
C:\My Documents\TextPadOpen
As well as pointing to files/directories, I also always store my workspaces here as opposed to the default location which is where one of the contained files is located.
I would like to see an option to automatically store a saved workspace in this folder ...
Two other ways to conveniently access documents:
Create a desktop shortcut directly to the file
"C:\Program Files\TextPad\TextPad.exe" -m "D:\webs\thewww\backmatter\ped.txt"
Note the '-m' . Bob gave me this one and I forget the function.
Create a desktop shortcut to a workspace:
"C:\Program Files\TextPad\TextPad.exe" H:\TextPadOpen\workspaces\pts_ped.tws
