Copy / Paste Data into Columns

Post by paseur »

Given this file:

AL
AK
AR

and with this in another file or in the clipboard:

Alabama
Alaska
Arkansas

How can I quickly render this:

AL Alabama
AK Alaska
AR Arkansas

Thanks, Ray

assuming 2 files

1) turn word wrap off
2) configure | block select mode
3) copy (in block mode) one of the columns of text
4) paste it next to the other column
5) done!

Must have word wrap off to get into block mode.
As I recall you must be in block mode before you copy the text in order to get the block mode copy to work

configure | block mode can be toggled on & off via the keyboard short-cut <cntrl><q>, <b>.

block mode can also be toggled on and off by double clicking the block mode indicator in the staus bar.

While we're listing out every conceivable shortcut... holding down the Alt key while dragging with the mouse overrides the current selection mode, so if block mode is off, Alt-dragging will select a block.
