4.7.2, Unicode and UTF-8

Hi all,

I've read through various posts that seem to indicate that 4.7.2 should be able to load a UTF-8 file and preserve Unicode characters (even if it doesn't display them correctly) when saving back to disk.

However, when I load a UTF-8 file (with a UTF-8 BOM) and save it back out, all of my Unicode characters (Japanese) are converted to question marks (ie. '?'). When loading I also get the message about characters that do not exist in the code page 1252.

I've set the following preferences:

1. Default encoding: UTF-8
2. Create new files as : Unix
3. Write Unicode and UTF-8 BOM: on
4. Various Unicode fonts like MS Sing, etc.

The only other thing that might be related is that I did a direct upgrade from 4.6 to 4.7.2.

Any ideas? I really would like to use TextPad for my Unicode needs.

In order to display Japanese characters correctly in TextPad, you will need to configure an appropriate font and script for the particular document class that you are using, for these files.

For instance, if you are using the Text document class, then you will need to implement the following procedure in TextPad:

From the Configure menu choose:

1. Preferences
2. "+" sign next to Document classes
3. "+" sign next to Text
4. Font
5. Select MS Mincho with a Japanese script
6. Click Apply / OK.


For Windows 2000, in order to install the appropriate fonts:

From the Start menu choose:

1. Control panel
2. Regional settings
3. General
4. Select the required language from the list of Language settings, and have the windows 2000 disc ready to insert, if required
5. Click apply

Alternatively press the button "Set default..." and choose the same language. You will need to reboot the system.

You will now be able to choose an appropriate font and script in TextPad.


For Windows XP, in order to install the appropriate fonts:

From the Start menu choose:

1. Control panel
2. Regional and language options
3. Languages
4. Check the first option on "Supplemental language support"
5. Click Apply/OK

It may be necessary to restart your computer.

You will now be able to choose an appropriate font and script in TextPad.

Thanks for the help. The one part I missed was selecting the script. Unfortunately MS Pincho is a terrible font for roman characters. I wish that Courier could support this.
