Rename files

Post by rackerson »

Renaming files is a feature I use quite a bit. I find it amazing that almost no other editors I have found implement this simple function.

I realize that TextPad makes this accessible from the File menu. Would it be possible to add it to the context menu in the Document Selector as well?

I almost always right click on a file when I want to perform some special action on it rather than go to a menu. This would make renaming the files a much smoother process for me because I keep forgetting the option isn't in the context menu!

Thanks.

My God, I can't believe I've been using TextPad for years and didn't know about this feature. I've been (to great annoyance) closing files, renaming them, then reopening them!

Rename files

Post by NaasDup »

Thanks 'rackerson' for this request. What a pitty it is ignored.

Allow me to add to this enhancement request. At the company where I work with 30+ developers using TextPad this the most annoying issue they all express about TextPad. We use v5.2. Some developers and scribe people refuse to use TextPad because of the missing Right Click context menu option. Such a simple fix one would think.

I would also like to see the Manage Files rename tool work like the File menu, Rename functionality. It is so ridiculous that you have to enter the new name, close the file and then open the new name. Why can't this tool automatically close the opened file and re-open the file under the new name.

Can TextPad support please tell us if the plan to include this in a hopefully near future release?

Context menu "Rename File"

Post by rackerson »

I agree 'NaasDup'. Back when I posted the request, I was on version 5.0.x of TextPad, when I visited the site today and saw that version 5.2 had been released I was very hopeful that my feature request would have been taken seriously.

While not having this context menu option will never prevent me from using TP, it is one of those little user-friendliness issues that I would have preferred a LOT more than some other items. Like, for instance, the new "H/V Tab Groups" feature that I know I will never use. I am sure the tab groups options took a while to implement and I am positive that the context menu feature I requested would have taken significantly less time. Was the time invested worth it? Perhaps, only time will tell. But from this user's perspective, it was time wasted.
