Regular expressions used in syntax files

Can regular expressions be used in syntax files? If so is there any special formatting?

I also would like to use regular expression in Syntax files. Or at least be able to highlight a word that begins with a particular character.

I am really in need to using these Regular Expression in my Synatx Files.

Can anybody help me out with the same.
