Problem: Highlighting Text Using the Mouse

Post by Jedi Lofty »

Hi there.

I am running a registered copy of TextPad v.4.7.2: 32-bit Edition on Windows 2000 Advanced Server (Service Pack 4).

I have noticed that, when highlighting text using the mouse, if the mouse pointer is dragged past the end of a line of text, the text is sometimes not highlighted. This is an intermittent problem.

For example: enter the text below in TextPad, place the mouse pointer just to the left of the I, click, then drag vertically downwards. I would expect the last four lines of text to be highlighted, which sometimes happens, but often doesn't.

Code: Select all

Text Text Text Text Text Text I
Text Text Text
Text Text Text Text
Text Text Text
Text Text Text Text Text
I look forward to reading any responses.

Cheers,

Jedi Lofty

Check that Configure, Block Select Mode is not checked.

If this is selected, then you will only be able to select by columns, anchored from where the cursor is when you drag the mouse.

Hmmm, just wondering, how did this end up in Enhancements?
Wrong forum section.!

Thanks for your reply, Bob.

No, Block Select Mode isn't on, and it doesn't look like a block selection: it starts out normally, but often stops half way through a line, and sometimes doesn't select anything at all.

What is your setting for
Configure - Preferences - Editor - "Constrain Cursor to text" ?

Does changing this setting remove the problem?

Hello there, I'm having the same problem as Jedi Lofty (I think).
I think the problem is if you have too large files open.

If i open a file with lets say ~10 rows, then i can highlight with the mouse, but if i open a file with ~1000 rows then i can highlight < 1 second and then the highlighting stops (I move the mouse more to the right, but the blue highlighting has stopped).

I have also tried with/without block select mode and with/without "Constrain Cursor to text" - all with the same problem.

Let's hope you'll find the error :]

Awesome text editor btw, keep it up!

Wow!

Thanks, MudGuard - I did have that option selected, and switching it off seems to have fixed the problem!

I agree with fobban, by the way - I've been using TextPad since version 3 and it is a fantastic product.

I'm unable to produce this error following your directions (3000+ lines in a file). Also followed Jedi Lofty's directions to the same effect. Using TP472 on XPsp1 w/all updates.
Can you reproduce this error in other apps?
Then I open up and see
the person fumbling here is me
a different way to be

I'm using TP472 on XPsp1 as well, and it only happens when I'm using TextPad. I'm using standard settings except for the font (using terminal there).
