4.7.1 "Save As" bug deletes files.

Post by jmcnelly »

Try this:

1. Using something besides textpad, create a file, say c:\temp\foo.txt, containing a few lines of text. Right click on foo.txt, view Properties, and make it read-only.

2. Right click again on the file, do a "Send To" Textpad.

3. Click in the document and type a few characters. (You should see nothing happen, because the doc is read-only.)

4. Select the "Configure.../Read Only" menu command, and then type a few characters.

5. Click the floppy disk icon to save the file. (You should see the Save As dialog.) Enter an asterisk after foo.txt in the filename field, and press ENTER. (You should see the file listing change to show only your foo.txt file.)

6. Right click on the file (in the Save As Dialog's file listing), and select Properties. Uncheck the "Read-only" checkbox, and click OK.

7. (You are now back at the Save As dialog.) Click OK to save the document. (You should see a dialog: "C:\temp\foo.txt already exists. Do you want to replace it?") Click Yes.

8. (You should see a message box, "Access to c:\temp\foo.txt was denied.") At this point, the file c:\temp\foo.txt has been deleted.

9. Try to save the file again, and it works. But if you exit Textpad without saving the file, it is gone.

I am running Textpad 4.7.1 on W2K Pro, with all critical updates and service packs installed.

I can turn the bug on or off by toggling Configure.../Preferences, File, Keep Files Locked While Editing Them. You must have the box checked to see the bug.
