using perforce with perforce

I tried to have textpad as my perforce editor but have one problem. If textpad isn't running when I issue a perforce command that causes textpad to be launched, textpads "keystroke compatibility" gets clobbered. If textpad is already running, then there's not problems. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Is there a way to have textpad "display the commandline that invoked you"?
