Avatar picture formats...

What formats are supported for avatars? Since it's a web page I would guess BMP, GIF, JPG, possibly PNG.

Any restriction on picture dimensions, color depth?

From your profile page:

Displays a small graphic image below your details in posts. Only one image can be displayed at a time, its width can be no greater than 80 pixels, the height no greater than 80 pixels, and the file size no more than 6 KB.

png is supported - see my picture.

bmp as a windows specific format is not really fit for web pages.
Also bmp files are usually quite big compared to the same image saved as gif or png...
