close java window automatically

In the editor bluej when you have a java program running and you go back to the code to make alterations, the java window and dos window closes itself automatically. In textpad the program does not close. It remains open and i find this a nuisance as i have to end up closing all the programs that are open from previous runs. is there anyway to change the feature so it is the same as bluej?
