when I do search..find and type underscores. they don't display.. I guess the line is too low!! so it looks exactly like spaces

any find is highlighted very faintly. how do I change the color?

ah, my mistake.. a silly one. I saw a previous post whre you had _* then just noticed now you wrote replace _ with space.

and _* can have no effect 'cos when zero underscores..

is _* a purely textpad feature? I haven't seen in it in regex tutorials

is it the same as a positive lookbehind of .*?

I can see it matches characters and leaves them there in any replace..useful..saves me from having to capture and reference, so as to keep it.

ta.. one point though.. use of the symbols (, ), |, { and } as operators when they stand alone and as literals when the are escaped with backslashes, " () and {} in textpad v5 anyway, seem to be literals when stand alone and operators when they are escaped. why doesn't \(\r\n\)\{3,\} match but this \(a\)\{3,\} does? how would I get \(\r\n\)\{3,\} to work? I see + is recognized, so wouldn't that be POSIX ERE? hmm, a limitation with using the hebrew code page, is it doesn't have the cantillation marks(which also punctuate the text of the bible and indicate accent). whereas unicode does have them. Anyhow, that did it.. Changing the font for the current document(view..document properties..font..), worked ...

Done. I still find I get question marks when I paste hebrew into textpad, and I get latin characters when I type into textpad while hebrew is chosen in the language bar. I changed the Font to Courier New - Hebrew script. for "default" and "text". Under configure..preferences..document classes.
