I just downloaded JDK 5 to my windows 2003 and a trial version of Textpad. I tried a very simple program displaying an empty frame, but it would not compile (I did set the path correctly since Java JFC sample programs do run). The Textpad output is: javac: invalid flag: C:\Documents and Settings ...
