Glad to have given an idea.

FWIW If you are part of a network domain running Active Directory then not all that appears "Local" is physically local. E.g. C:\temp may be on your hard disc but C:\Users\yourname\documents may be ona geographically remote network disc.

Saving to C:\Users\myname\Downloads is as fast as notepad.

If editing a text file in Textpad it seems that inserting 0x0010 or 0x0013 causes a 0x0013 0x0010 pair to be inserted into the file. You can open a file into a hex view from within Textpad: From the File menu, choose Open. The File Open dialog appears. Select the file to open. Click the down arrow ...

I have just written [It’s or person’s or even peoples’.] (without square brackets) into MS Word then cut & patse that into an open TP document. The TP spell check has no issue with "peoples'" but states that the oither two are not in its dictionary. TP 7.3.0 (64bit) Word 14.0.7128.50000 (32bit) ...

Are both the XP and the W7 OS 32 bit or both 64 bit or a mixture of the two? If XP is 32 and W7 is 64 do you need to change the W7 path from ...\Program FIles\... to ...\Program FIles (x86)\... ?

I am clearly a little naive as I believed that a "portable" could be run without leaving muddy footprints on the host. I must reconsider.

BBAdmin, does your download limit allow for downloaders that open multiple streams, such as FireFox? I too had to try many times over a period of about a week before I was successful. I was irritated.

You are quite correct, I have that option selected. When I deselect it, TextPad behaves as you described.

TextPad has put a command in my file context menu when I installed it. So, if I right click on a file, then choose Textad from the context menu, the files will keep opening up in the same instance of the programme.
When I do that I get two separate instances of TextPad. :?

Rather than double-clicking the new file, I just drag it to the already open textpad file; textpad then opens the new file in a new tab.
