SteveH - thanks for the suggestion. The utility you suggest will remove formatting like bold and underline (which, of course, TextPad already does), but not the smart quotes etc (which is what I really want to remove). MudGuard - I take you point that the problem is really "caused" by Microsoft, but ...

I often paste text from MS Office applications and I then have to tidy up all the "smart" quotes (single and double), ellipsis, dashes etc etc in order to turn the text into pure ASCII. Would it be possible to add an option to do this - for example a "Paste as plain text" option to the right-click ...

I found the answer
Hi Since writing this, I found the answer. It seems to be caused by TP 5 loading into a different folder to TP 4. In Windows Explorer: Tools > Folder Options... Select the File Types tab Find and highlight the TXT file type Click the Advanced button Click the Change Icon... button on the next window ...

Textpad icon missing from Windows Explorer
After updating to TextPad 5.0x, the TextPad icon no longer shows up in Windows Explorer for files I've associated with TextPad.
Double-click opens them fine, so the association itself seems to be working.
Any ideas?
