I switched to a Mac and don't use Textpad much anymore.
If I remember correctly, try switching your Windows theme to classic (or disabling the Themes service) and using Textpad 5.2

Would Helios please consider clarifying http://www.textpad.com/order/upgrades.html so we know whether people who buy now are covered for 4.x + 5.x? Maybe I'm a bit daft, but as it is worded now, it is not clear. (it could mean 4.x and 5.0 but you have to pay extra for 5.5)

If you buy a new license for Textpad now, are you covered for free upgrades through the entire 5.x range? (5.5, 5.6, etc.)
Also, is there a pref or registry key to revert 5.0's non-standard menus/toolbars back to the previous classic style?
