If B is a Windows file system shortcut to A , and I edit B ,
TextPad reads in A , and when it writes, it writes the changed text to a
new file, B , that overwrites the shortcut, resulting in two different files

The earlier version did not do this.

Windows cannot find <full-dir-path>/<file-core-name>.txt in TextPad 5.0

Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / File Types / Extension /
Select: TXT -- Text Document:
Delete / YES / Close
