Block select mode changing when I don't want it

Often (not always), when I use Ctl-Home or my own keystroke alias (Ctl-Q Ctl-R) to go the top of a file, the block select mode changes to the columnar mode, which I don't want. I'm using v. 5.3. When I use Esc to do a "select cancel" (i.e., to un-highlight a selected section of text, and turn off a selection in process), nothing happens until I hit Esc a second time. I also have tried assigning various keystroke combinations to "select cancel" via Configure-Preferences-K...
