I looked at the file in hex (that brought me back a few years!). There were no special characters where the triangles were appearing in Visible Spaces.
I think that TextPad was putting in the triangles to mark where the tab characters would have appeared as Preferences...Tabulation. However I can't ...

I have been trying to edit what looked like a tab delimited file. After I loaded it and enabled Visible Spaces I saw at a glance what I assumed to be tab marks.
However When I Save'd the file the 'tabs' were replaced by spaces in spite of setting Preferences.
