Textpad won't install

Post by Ryck »

Hi

I'm rebuilding my PC. I'm up to the point where I'm re-installing TextPad when I get this error.

An error occurred while downloading the file /WindowsInstaler-KB89380-x8.exe. What would you like to do? RETRY CANCEL

Pressing RETRY repeats the message. Pressing CANCEL gives me the following message.

InstallSheild: 1155: File D:\Install2008\TextPad\instmsi30.exe not found OK

I downloaded a fresh copy of txpeng520.exe and I get the same message.

I use Microsoft Windows XP Home SP2. I haven't installed an antivirus program yet. And I turned off the Windows Firewall on a guess. Same error.

Any ideas?

One more thing I should add. On a hunch I tried to install Textpad 473 and that installed perfectly.

I don't know what could be going on.

Please try to manually download and install the latest Windows Installer from Microsoft, and then install TextPad:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

I hope this helps.

An instance of Textpad starts for no reason...

Post by jnsunkersett »

Thx,

after installing the updated installer, I could install Textpad, but with a difference....

Now every time, I log IN, an instance of Textpad starts (with a new/ empty document), for no reason.

1. A shortcut to textpad does not exist in the 'All Programs --> Startup'
2. There is no entry for Textpad, under
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx

any clues?

Try unchecking the option to put TextPad on the Startup menu, on the General Preferences page.

I hope this helps.

Re the three registry folders, RUN, etc. did you check both CURRENT_USER and LOCAL_MACHINE branches?

Also, try to do a full Search for TextPad in the registry and review all instances, not just the obvious ones you identified.

Also try free utility ProcessViewer ( www.prcview.com ), that has a View/AutoRun option that shows all StartUps, the executable command line, and the trigger source. I believe that the current version is 5.2.15.1 I. I have used this for years, highly recommend it for this and other purposes.
Hope this was helpful.............good luck,
Bob
