When I'm twiddling with very large files, several hundred MB or larger, I experience a noticeable slowdown on the network. As such, I first copy big files locally, then work on them. This is what I would expect.

I'm again using UE from time to time, mostly because it's what my coworkers use. Read this thread to see recent chicanery with UE.

My downward--or upward, depending upon your viewpoint--spiral into larger and larger files continues. Seems logical that if a 3 GB file breaks WE, then a 5 GB file certainly will. It did, but perhaps this unknown, unasked question simply needed to be asked.

Other "fine products" on the market

Increasingly, I find myself having to work with Unicode or UTF-8 files from time to time. NotePad++ is free, plus we have a license at work for UltraEdit. Today I had a WTMF moment with UE. Opened an 800 MB file, just to look at it in UE. Little voice in my head said, "Make a backup first"...

Replacement Expression Nuance With Sub-expressions

I'm doing some data cleansing with WE, but I ran into the same Regex issue with TP. I'm changing dates in a text qualified CSV file from DDMMMYYYY ("22Jan2014") to YYYYMMDD ("20140122"). This Regex Replace did not work. F i nd what: (")(\d{2})(Jan)(\d{4})(") Re p lace w...

Read Only Files

Something of a duh moment for me. WildEdit does not operate on Read Only files. Spun in circles for 15 minutes before I figured that out.

I think I have some really old Macros from 4.x days that still work fine.

I believe if you used any Regex, which doesn't work under Perl, you may have to re-record those.

It pays to back up ConfigState.xml and GUIState.xml from time to time--particularly after making a lot of changes.

Close TextPad. Open up ConfigState.xml in another editor. Look for Recent Files structure. Should look something like this. <TextPad> <Preferences> ... </Preferences> <Document-Classes> ... </Document-Classes> <Options> ... </Options> <Recent-File-List> <value name="MRUMax" type="uint...

When you say "not sticking", what do you mean?

Are you saying that the value you enter into Number of recent files on File menu does not remain in Configure, Preferences, File?

If so, then did you click Apply after setting the value?

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. Did you resolve it by deleting the Tool from ConfigState.XML--using an editor other than TextPad, and with TextPad closed. You may have to "resequence" your other Tools in the XML. If I delete Tool 0, then I would make Tool 1 now Tool 0, Tool 2 now...

WildEdit Integration With TextPad

There are times when I'm in TextPad and doing something that borders on insanity, and at those times I need the power of WildEdit. CTRL-H (MS Keystroke Compatibility) brings up the Replace Menu A WildEdit Replace Menu option, which I could shortcut to something like CTRL-SHFT-H, would be marvelous. ...
