preferences/folders (not sure about exact wording -
no Textpad installed on the PC I'm writing from)

there you can edit different paths
one of them for the *.syn (Textpad Syntax) files your Textpad installation is using

TP 5.4.2 - is quite ok for me ,
before I used TP 4.73 for a long time

F4 FindNext in Search Window did not work sometimes on WinXP 32bit TP 5.4.2 which never had been a problem 4.73

probably you used Ctrl-M for finding the corresponding brace Ctrl-Shift-M => highlight everything between 2 braces textpad does not recognize syntax thats done by e.g. ctags, maybe that would be of use for you => look for ctags in http://www.textpad.com/add-ons/index.html and in addition http://ctag...
