This particular utility backs up settings that are stored in the Registry, however, settings for the current versions of TextPad are no longer stored there. They are now saved to two xml files, GUIState.xml and ConfigState.xml, which are normally located in: C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Helios\...

If you save the file or files as a Workspace from the File menu, then attributes such as visible spaces and bookmarks are retained when the .tws file is opened, on subsequent occasions.

Please try renaming the XML file ( GUIState.xml),to see if that solves the problem. Exit from TextPad before renaming the file.

In windows 7 it's stored here:

C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Helios\TextPad\6.0.

Obvious question to start with but are the documents set to Read only?

One possibility is that if you are running a 64 bit operating system, you still need to install the 32 bit version of the JDK, otherwise TextPad won't recognise it.

It is possible that the dictionary files have not been moved from the TextPad 4 Spelling sub folder into the TextPad 5 sub folder. If that is the case, then simply move them to the Spelling sub folder of your TextPad 5 installation folder.
